THE SHORT VERSION

The key blocks

  • Inventory critical accounts before buying hardware.
  • A backup is only useful if restoration works.
  • Avoid making one device your only recovery route.
01 /

Start with an inventory

List what keeps one workday running: email, password management, files, communication and payments. For each, record the primary device, recovery route and order of action if access is lost.

This map reveals gaps more clearly than a shopping list. The guide recommends a process, not particular products, relocation arrangements or tax decisions.

02 /

Give account access a backup route

CISA’s basic security material advocates unique passwords, password management and multifactor authentication. Once configured, check whether recovery codes and backup factors are usable without your primary phone.

Follow each provider’s recovery guidance. Do not combine passwords, verification codes and complete recovery information in an unencrypted note.

03 /

Finish the backup with a restoration test

Our suggested exercise is to restore one non-sensitive file on a backup device and inspect its version, permissions and readability. A synchronization-success message does not establish that accidental deletion can be reversed.

Record which information should not synchronize. Workplace documents and wallet recovery secrets require different handling.

04 /

Delay actions that deserve full attention

Travel deadlines make it easier to skim a domain or confirmation screen. Set a personal rule that major transfers, key changes and new permissions wait until you can inspect them carefully.

Keep necessary itinerary and contact details available offline while minimizing personal information. Make the trade-off explicit rather than carrying every document by default.

05 /

Rehearse losing access

Pretend your primary phone is temporarily unavailable. Use a backup route for a non-sensitive account and record any failed steps. Do not delete real data or disable your only verification method during the exercise.

A resilient setup provides a clear next step when something fails. Revisit the recovery plan as your devices and daily work change.
